Anchorage Digital has acquired
enterprise payments platform Routable in a move designed to accelerate the
adoption of stablecoins and integrate digital assets into mainstream corporate
payment infrastructure.
The acquisition, announced Tuesday,
will combine Anchorage Digital's regulated cryptocurrency banking and
settlement capabilities with Routable's enterprise payout technology. Financial
terms were not disclosed.
The transaction represents a
significant expansion of Anchorage Digital's ambitions beyond cryptocurrency
markets, positioning the company to serve major technology businesses,
multinational corporations and financial institutions seeking integrated payment
solutions across traditional currencies and digital assets.
Under the arrangement, Anchorage
Digital will provide infrastructure supporting stablecoin issuance, custody and
settlement, while Routable will manage payment distribution and connect
corporate enterprise resource planning systems to established payment networks.
Routable specializes in automating
complex business payment operations, including payee onboarding, identity
verification, tax compliance and high-volume disbursements. Its technology uses
a developer-focused application programming interface to integrate payment
processing into existing enterprise systems.
The company, which counts OpenAI CEO
Sam Altman among its early investors, has reported annual growth of at least
100% over the past two years.
Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley
described the acquisition as the culmination of a strategy to extend
institutional digital asset infrastructure into the wider corporate economy.
"We spent nearly a decade
earning the trust of crypto natives and the world's largest financial
institutions, and knew Big Tech and Fortune 500 companies would follow,"
McCauley said.
He added that large corporations move
billions of dollars daily but have historically lacked regulated providers
capable of delivering seamless payment services across conventional and digital
currencies.
The acquisition also highlights
Anchorage Digital's established position within the evolving US regulatory
framework for digital assets.
In 2021, the company secured a
federal trust bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency,
becoming an early recipient of federal banking authorization specifically
focused on digital assets.
However, its regulatory journey has
included significant compliance challenges. In 2022, the OCC imposed a consent
order requiring improvements to the company's anti-money laundering controls.
That enforcement action was subsequently terminated in 2025 following a
three-year remediation period.
The acquisition comes as stablecoins
increasingly attract interest from corporations seeking faster settlement,
reduced payment friction and more efficient cross-border transactions.
Routable CEO and co-founder Omri Mor
said the combination would allow customers to retain their existing payment
capabilities while gaining access to regulated digital asset infrastructure.
"Joining Anchorage Digital means
our clients get the same rails they rely on today, plus a regulated bridge into
digital assets the moment they want it," Mor said.
Following the acquisition, Routable
will operate under the brand Routable by Anchorage Digital. Its platform will
incorporate native stablecoin and tokenized deposit settlement capabilities,
creating what the companies describe as an asset-agnostic payment orchestration
platform.
Routable co-founder Tom Harel
emphasized that corporate customers prioritize payment execution rather than
the underlying technology or currency.
"The companies we serve don't
think in terms of digital assets versus fiat, they think in terms of payouts
that arrive," Harel said.
The transaction reinforces McCauley's
longstanding argument that stablecoins are evolving from cryptocurrency trading
instruments into essential components of financial infrastructure.
In a 2025 interview, he characterized
stablecoins as becoming "core plumbing in the digital financial
system."
For financial institutions, the
combination could intensify competition in enterprise payments as regulated
digital asset providers move into services traditionally dominated by banks and
established payment processors.
Anchorage Digital and Routable expect
to introduce integrated products over the coming quarters, although neither
company has disclosed a detailed implementation timetable.
