In this interview, Emma Hagan, CEO of ClearBank UK, emphasizes the critical need for adaptability, resilience, and curiosity in the next generation of risk managers. As technology and global dynamics evolve at unprecedented speeds, traditional approaches to hiring and training in risk are no longer sufficient.
Emma advocates for a mindset-first approach—where candidates are assessed not just on experience but on their willingness to learn, collaborate, and problem-solve in high-change environments.
ClearBank addresses the talent gap by expanding the pipeline beyond conventional financial services backgrounds and providing highly personalized, role-relevant training.
By aligning incentives and evaluation metrics across the organization—especially through shared scorecards and visible recognition—ClearBank ensures risk professionals are seen as key commercial contributors, not just gatekeepers.
For future CROs, success now demands not only technical acumen but also strategic alignment, influence, and the ability to integrate risk thinking across the business.
Emma Hagan is Chief Risk and Compliance Officer at ClearBank responsible for all risk and compliance-related activities. She has over 18 years’ experience in commercial and corporate banking in both first and second lines of defence. Emma joined ClearBank from Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) where she was Chief Risk Officer for EMEA serving as part of the EMEA leadership and global risk leadership teams. Prior to SVB she worked at Lloyds HBOS in a variety of roles.
