  • Stripe is expanding Link into agentic commerce through integrations with Meta's Muse, xAI's Grok Bot and Instinct

  • Agentic commerce could shift competition from consumer checkout choices toward the payment services selected by AI

Stripe is positioning its Link digital wallet at the center of the emerging agentic commerce market, striking partnerships with three major artificial intelligence platforms as developers race to give AI assistants the ability to make purchases for consumers.

Meta Platforms has integrated Link into its new Muse personal AI agent, allowing the assistant to complete payment transactions on a user's behalf.

The agreement follows Link integrations announced with xAI's Grok Bot and Instinct, an AI assistant developed by Spear Street Technology.

The partnerships potentially give Stripe a stronger connection with consumers as AI agents begin to play a greater role in finding products, comparing offers and completing transactions.

Richard Crone, CEO of payments advisory firm Crone Consulting, said the evolution of agentic commerce could increasingly blur the distinction between digital wallets and the AI assistants using them.

"Essentially, the way to think about this is that the agent will be the wallet or the wallet will be the agent," Crone said.

Stripe launched Link in 2021 and says the wallet has accumulated 300 million users globally. It is now integrated with around 1 million merchants, where it is designed to accelerate checkout while improving conversion and payment authorization rates.

The company introduced Link payments specifically for AI agents in April as part of its annual conference for developers and customers.

The move could become strategically important for Stripe, whose payments business has traditionally focused heavily on serving merchants rather than establishing direct consumer relationships.

Link effectively operates as a card-on-file service for online transactions, placing it in competition with payment and autofill services including Apple Pay, Google Chrome and Paze, according to Crone.

Integrating that capability directly into AI assistants could give Stripe a foothold in a new form of commerce in which consumers increasingly delegate purchasing decisions and transactions to software.

Security and control will also be critical as agents gain greater authority over consumers' money.

Meta said Muse does not receive the customer's underlying payment information when making purchases through Link. Instead, the wallet creates a one-time-use card for the transaction, separating the AI agent from sensitive payment credentials.

Muse users making eligible purchases through Link will also receive protections covering issues including damaged or lost items, subsequent price reductions, fee-free returns and return guarantees.

The commercial model surrounding AI shopping agents could ultimately extend considerably beyond payments processing.

Crone suggested Meta could monetize Muse by charging merchants a percentage when its agent generates a sale.

AI assistants could potentially also identify discounts, negotiate savings or detect subscriptions consumers no longer require.

That could change where power sits in the digital shopping journey.

Instead of consumers manually moving between search engines, merchant websites and payment services, an AI agent could potentially perform much of the process before using an embedded wallet to execute the final transaction.

For Stripe, integrating Link with Meta, xAI and Instinct provides an early opportunity to establish its wallet as the payment layer behind that emerging model.
